Activity Descriptions
Junior Engineers, Tomorrow's Scientists
The JETS (Junior Engineers, Tomorrow's Scientists) Civil Engineering class is an after school program for minority high school students. The classes are project-based (hands on!) and cover the areas of structures, transportation, water resources, concrete canoe, bridge building competition, airports, air pollution and urban planning. We have curriculum ideas and people to assist- but we need YOU to volunteer an evening or two to help teach a class! The classes will be held from January to April 2010 and meet Tuesdays, from 6-8 p.m. JETS events are held at the Qwest Communications Building, 4301 East Colfax (Colfax and Bellaire), on the third floor.

The class will consists of 10-12 students ranging from 8th to 10th grade and will focus on the basic principles of Civil Engineering. No teaching experience is required to volunteer, only an interest in the subject of Civil Engineering and a passion to work with kids. John Weekley is currently the class advisor and would like to find someone to be a co-advisor. We currently have guest lecturers lined up for the majority of the classes that teach each class, but it is the role of the class co-advisors to serve as the point of contact and face of the civil engineering class.

If you are interested in volunteering to become a co-advisor, or if you have any questions, please contact John Weekley at john.weekley@jacobs.com or Brian Bern at brian_bern@martixdesigngroup.com.

CABPES Tutoring
CABPES-Colorado Association of Black Professional Engineers & Scientists is seeking tutors to assist youth students with high school and college prep math. Tutors give a minimum of two hours on any Monday and/or Wednesday evening between 6pm and 8pm at CABPES offices which are conveniently located at Colorado and Colfax Ave in Denver. Among the many benefits of being a CABPES tutor is that tutors make a commitment to provide tutoring according to their schedule demands. CABPES tutors are free to give as much or as little time as they are able for as short or long a period they can. Tutors truly make a difference in the academic lives of our students as measured by the improvement in student test scores post tutoring at CABPES. Tutors are recognized quarterly for outstanding volunteerism at CABPES Tutor Meetings with gift cards, certificates of recognition and letters from students. CABPES tutors receive special invitations to private CABPES functions, professional networking events and our annual banquet. To sign up to become a tutor at CABPES, write to cabpestutors@cabpes.com or call 303-329-3929. Please note all CABPES tutors must pass a criminal background screening. Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering at CABPES! Send information you would like to post on the monthly newsletter to John Weekley at jwweekley@hotmail.com.
Math Enrichment Program
The YMG is assisting the Math Enrichment Program again this year, and we are looking for volunteers to tutor math to minority grade and high school students. The YMG had 10 members volunteer last year, and we would like to continue our strong participation. No commitment is too small! The program meets on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 PM at the Quest Communications Building, 4301 East Colfax (Colfax and Bellaire), on the third floor. If one Wednesday a month works for you, please volunteer! Pleas contact John Weekley if you are interested.
Denver Rescue Mission Kitchen Help
The YMG volunteers once every other month at the Denver Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen in downtown Denver. Our time there is spent unloading food shipments and stocking shelves, cleaning, and preparing and serving meals. We try to get a group of four for each visit. For more information , contact John Weekley.
ASCE Rebuilding Day
Rebuilding A Stronger Community... As you may be aware, both national ASCE and local ASCE sections have established an alliance with Rebuilding Together to help rehabilitate homes for elderly and disabled persons. Rebuilding Together*Metro Denver (RT*MD) is a non-profit organization working in partnership with the community, volunteers, and skilled labor, to stabilize and revitalize homes in our metropolitan area. The RT*MD initiative brings homeowners in need together with volunteers from all walks of life to prevent homelessness and to improve the quality of the lives of our recipients. Locally, the Colorado Section ASCE has been a House Sponsor for the past three years. You can find more information on the ASCE Section Website.
Urban Peak Meal Preparation
Urban Peak is a youth Shelter in south Denver that provides a home, community environment and meals for live-in youth. Our volunteer efforts are a rewarding way to help younger members of our society get a second chance. The environment in positive, fun, and fast paced. We provide and prepare the meals, so we need help with menu selection, food collection and meal preparation, for 40 youths. If you have just two hours to get involved, this is a great way to help out. Please contact John Weekley to get involved.
